Late one night, under the cold glow of parking lot lights, a heartbreaking scene unfolded. Security cameras captured a woman driving into an empty parking area, opening her car door, and leaving her dog behind. Within seconds, the car disappeared into the darkness, leaving the dog alone on the concrete. She did not run after the vehicle. She did not bark. She simply collapsed where she was left.
The footage quickly spread online and sparked outrage. Even though the vehicle and license plate were visible, local authorities initially declined to intervene or identify the owner. For many, that refusal felt like a second abandonment.
It was then that the animal rescue group Pits Ales stepped in.
A Body at the Edge of Survival
When rescuers arrived, they found the dog lying motionless on the cold ground. Her body was dangerously thin, her strength nearly gone. She could not stand. She could barely lift her head. This gentle pit bull, later named Greta, was still alive—but just barely.
She was rushed to a veterinary clinic immediately. What the rescuers saw up close was even more devastating than what the camera had captured.

A Medical Emergency Unfolds
Greta’s condition was critical. Her face was covered in wounds, her eyes swollen and painful. Her skin showed signs of severe neglect, with open sores that had been left untreated for far too long. She trembled constantly, letting out soft cries that reflected both pain and fear.
Her body temperature was dangerously high. She was severely malnourished, with visible muscle loss across her frame. All four of her legs were swollen and inflamed. Veterinarians determined that she had likely been restrained with a very short chain for extended periods, forcing her to stand or move on harsh, overheated ground. The damage to her paw pads and skin suggested prolonged suffering, not a single incident.
Despite everything, Greta showed one powerful sign of hope—she still wanted to live. When food was gently offered, she tried to eat. That small effort meant everything.
Difficult Truths and a Long Road Ahead
Further examinations brought mixed news. Imaging tests showed no severe internal organ damage, which gave the team a reason to breathe. But blood tests revealed something far more serious: Greta tested positive for Leishmaniasis, a chronic and life-threatening disease.
While the illness cannot be completely cured, it can be managed with ongoing medication and care. Greta also suffered from serious digestive inflammation and unstable blood sugar levels, making her recovery even more complex.
She was admitted to intensive care.

Care, Compassion, and Constant Presence
For more than a week, Greta remained under close medical supervision. Her fever gradually came down. Her body temperature stabilized. IV fluids, medication, and daily wound care became part of her routine. She was wrapped in warm blankets, protected from stress, and given quiet moments to rest.
One rescuer in particular, Alessandro from Pits Ales, stayed close to her side. He fed her by hand, cleaned her wounds, and spoke softly to her throughout the day. Watching Greta endure so much pain was overwhelming, and there were moments when the weight of her story brought him to tears. But he never stepped away.
Greta noticed.
Slowly, her eyes began to soften. She no longer flinched at every touch. She rested more peacefully, knowing she was no longer alone.
A Life Worth Fighting For
Greta’s journey is far from over. Managing her illness will require ongoing treatment, careful monitoring, and a calm environment where her body can continue to heal. Because of the high cost of care and limited shelter space, Pits Ales is now seeking financial support and a temporary foster home to give Greta the best possible chance at recovery.
Despite everything she has endured—abandonment, pain, illness—Greta is safe now. She is loved. And every day, she continues to fight.
Her story is not just about suffering. It is about resilience. It is about the difference compassion can make when someone chooses not to look away. Greta may carry the scars of her past, but she is no longer facing them alone.
