The Abandoned French Bulldog Puppy Who Refused to Stop Fighting

Some rescue stories begin with a moment that is impossible to forget.

For Dona, that moment came when someone noticed a small, motionless figure lying alone beside the road. At first glance, it was difficult to believe the fragile body belonged to a young dog. But when rescuers stepped closer, they realized the truth.

The tiny French Bulldog puppy was still alive.

Barely.

What followed became a long and emotional journey—one that would test both Dona’s strength and the compassion of everyone who refused to give up on her.

A Puppy Found at the Edge of Survival

When Dona was discovered, her condition was heartbreaking.

Her body weighed only 8 pounds (about 3.6 kilograms)—almost half the healthy weight expected for a puppy of her age. She was severely dehydrated and so weak that she could barely move.

Her face was painfully swollen from infection, with a large pocket of fluid beneath the skin. One of her legs was broken, making it impossible for her to stand properly. Her eyes looked tired and distant, as if she had already endured more suffering than a young dog should ever face.

Even breathing seemed to require effort.

It was clear she needed immediate medical care.

A Race Against Time

The rescuer carefully lifted Dona and rushed her to the CAVI emergency veterinary clinic.

At first, the veterinary team worked quickly to stabilize her condition. Blood tests were performed, medications were given, and the staff monitored her closely throughout the night.

Although the doctors said Dona was temporarily stable, the situation remained fragile.

Her body was infested with fleas and ticks. She refused food and began vomiting dark liquid repeatedly, a sign that her digestive system was severely distressed.

Because of her weakness, Dona had to be hospitalized immediately for intensive treatment. Ultrasounds and X-rays were ordered as the medical team tried to understand the full extent of her condition.

The night felt endless for everyone waiting beside her.

A Difficult Medical Battle

As tests continued, doctors discovered that Dona was suffering from severe dehydration and acute gastritis, which prevented her from keeping food down. To maintain her strength, she had to receive fluids and nutrients through intravenous therapy.

Meanwhile, the infection on her head required urgent attention.

Veterinarians carefully drained the large abscess, releasing a significant amount of infected fluid. The procedure was necessary, but it was painful to watch.

Despite the treatment, Dona’s fight was far from over.

Later that same night, she experienced a seizure. Days passed, yet she continued vomiting whenever she tried to eat. Further ultrasounds revealed inflammation within her digestive system, while blood tests showed worrying changes in her immune markers.

Doctors performed two cytology tests to search for possible tumors, but the results remained unclear.

Eventually, the team decided that Dona would need a CT scan to investigate deeper problems—an examination that required anesthesia, a serious risk for such a fragile patient.

Everyone knew the road ahead would not be easy.

Small Signs of Hope

While waiting for further tests, Dona continued receiving careful support.

She was fed small amounts of liquid food while positioned upright to help her swallow safely.

Then, a small miracle appeared.

For the first time in days, 48 hours passed without vomiting.

The drainage tube in her head began releasing clearer fluid—an encouraging sign that the infection was slowly improving. Though still weak, Dona started showing subtle changes in her behavior.

She recognized familiar voices.

Her tail wagged gently.

And sometimes, she leaned forward asking for a soft scratch behind her ears.

Even through pain, Dona was showing that she wanted to live.

A Community Steps Forward

As the days went by, the cost of Dona’s treatment continued to grow.

Determined not to abandon her, the rescuer shared her story with the community. People who had never met Dona before were moved by her struggle and began offering support.

The clinic director also stepped in, helping reduce the cost of care.

Thanks to the kindness of many strangers, Dona’s treatment could continue.

Each donation became another chance for her to keep fighting.

A Promise for the Future

Today, Dona’s recovery remains a journey still unfolding.

Doctors continue monitoring her condition, and there are still uncertainties ahead. But what matters most is that she is no longer alone.

Her rescuer made her a promise.

One day, when she is strong enough, Dona will walk on the beach. She will sleep on a soft bed. She will live a life filled with warmth instead of fear.

And every day, Dona keeps proving she deserves that chance.

Her story is a reminder that even the smallest life can carry extraordinary courage.

Dona hasn’t given up.

And neither have the people who believe in her.
