In a residential area near Houston, Texas, a strange and heartbreaking situation unfolded involving a stray dog who had simply been searching for food.

One evening, a doorbell security camera captured the moment everything went wrong.

The dog had wandered onto a front porch, likely drawn by the scent of food. On the porch sat a plastic container that was part of an automatic feeder for cats. As the hungry dog tried to investigate the source of the smell, his head slipped into the container.

But when he tried to pull back, it wouldn’t come off.

The plastic jar became stuck firmly around his head.

The poor dog panicked and ran off with the container still trapped around his neck. From that moment on, he began wandering the neighborhood with the strange plastic object covering his head.

Later, rescuers would give him a name: Jughead.

Surviving With the Jar Still Attached

Jughead’s situation quickly became known to a local animal rescuer named Terri Goodnight.

What made the story even more touching was that Jughead was not alone.

A smaller stray dog stayed close to him at all times. The two seemed inseparable, moving through the neighborhood together like loyal companions. The smaller dog would later be named Red.

For more than a month—from October 21 to November 24—Jughead continued to roam the area with the jar stuck on his head.

Despite the difficult situation, he managed to survive in a surprisingly clever way.

The plastic container had a small opening, and Jughead eventually figured out how to use it to his advantage. When he found food bowls left outside homes, he would tip them carefully so that the kibble fell through the small opening and into the container where he could reach it.

It was an impressive display of intelligence and determination.

Still, living with the container attached was exhausting and dangerous.

She set up a humane trap cage with a remote-controlled door, hoping to capture him safely without causing panic or injury.

The effort required incredible persistence.

Terri visited the area 25 separate times, sometimes staying for nearly 24 hours straight, waiting for the right moment. Food was placed inside the trap to encourage Jughead to enter.

After more than a month of living with the heavy plastic jar around his neck, Jughead was able to lift his head freely again.

Jughead’s rescue also meant safety for Red, who had stayed beside him throughout the entire ordeal.

The two dogs were brought to a safe place where they could finally rest and recover. Red was later given a new name—Archie—but their friendship remained unchanged.

Today, both dogs are healthy, safe, and being cared for together.

They still stay close to each other, just as they did when they wandered the streets as strays.

Their story is a reminder of two powerful things: the incredible resilience animals can show in difficult situations—and the patience and compassion of the people who refuse to stop trying to help them.

Because of that determination, Jughead no longer has to survive with a jar on his head.
