In June, a woman strolling down a street in Tampa, Florida, stumbled upon an agonizing sight that would change the life of one abandoned dog forever.
There, by the window of a house, stood a frail and emaciated poodle, its bones clearly visible beneath its patchy coat. The woman immediately recognized the urgency of the situation and contacted animal control to report the dog’s condition.

Debbie Goldsberry, the founder of Senior Paws Sanctuary, told The Dodo that the woman could see from a distance just how badly the dog was suffering.
When animal control officers arrived and entered the home, they were faced with a heartbreaking scene—three dogs were found in critical condition, starving and malnourished. While two of the dogs tragically didn’t survive, the poodle, who had been standing by the window, was still alive, though barely.
This poor nine-year-old poodle, later named Beni, was rushed to a local shelter. His health was in severe decline, with extreme malnutrition, diabetes, a tumor on his foot, a skin infection, and significant hair loss ravaging his body.
Given his state, the shelter had scheduled him for euthanasia. However, just before that could happen, an email about Beni caught Goldsberry’s attention.
“If a rescue didn’t step in, he wasn’t going to make it out,” Goldsberry explained. She quickly rallied her team of volunteers and arranged transportation to bring Beni to Fort Myers, hopeful that she could save him.

Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Beni was immediately examined by a veterinarian, but his survival seemed uncertain. “He didn’t know how to eat anymore,” Goldsberry said. “He would take food in his mouth but didn’t know how to swallow or digest it.”
Against all odds, Beni began showing signs of recovery. Once he was released from the clinic, he found a new home with Goldsberry and her 26 other rescue dogs at the sanctuary. Despite his ongoing health issues, Goldsberry kept a vigilant eye on him.
Beni’s recovery was slow but steady. “We fed him with great care because he would often vomit,” Goldsberry recalled. “He also refused to drink water, which is unusual for diabetics, but Beni just wasn’t thirsty.”
With each passing day at the sanctuary, Beni showed small victories. “He started to realize that people cared about him,” Goldsberry said. “He slowly started to eat and drink again.”

Goldsberry made it her mission to provide comfort to Beni, showing him that he was finally safe and loved. “He had been through so much,” she shared. “To see him wag his tail for the first time and play with a toy was nothing short of amazing.”
As time passed, Beni’s health improved significantly. His diabetes became more manageable, and he grew a gorgeous, shiny black coat. Most importantly, his confidence blossomed. “His tail never stops wagging now,” Goldsberry said with a smile. “He’s friendly with everyone he meets.”
However, when Beni underwent surgery to remove the tumor on his foot, the vet discovered devastating news: Beni had terminal cancer, in its third and final stage. Despite this, Beni remains full of joy, continuing to embrace his new life with Goldsberry’s unwavering love and care.

“We do everything we can to make each day special for our little ‘blessing,’” Goldsberry commented. “No matter what happens, he will be cherished and loved for the rest of his days.”
Beni’s incredible journey from suffering to a life full of love and warmth serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the healing power of compassion.
