For months, a small family of dogs had survived quietly along the edges of Highway 105. Cars rushed past just yards away, unaware that lives were unfolding in the shadows of tall grass and tangled brush.
Three adult dogs stayed close together. A large Rottweiler. A nervous Pit Bull. And a white female who appeared heavily pregnant. They moved cautiously, always alert, living day to day in a place never meant to be home.
No one knew how much time they had left. Until one call changed everything.
A Troubling Discovery That Raised New Questions
When Eldad from Hope For Paws arrived with his team, something felt immediately wrong. The white female no longer showed signs of pregnancy.
That could only mean one thing.
Somewhere nearby, puppies had already been born. And if they were still alive, they were dangerously close to the highway, hidden on a steep hillside with no protection.
The race against time had begun.

Searching the Hillside for a Sound of Life
After carefully securing the three adult dogs with food, Eldad climbed over a fence and into dense brush lining the slope. The terrain was unforgiving. Thick vegetation. Loose dirt. A steep drop just steps away.
Then he tried something simple—and powerful.
He played the sound of a crying puppy.
Almost instantly, the mother dog responded. Her ears lifted. Her body tensed. She moved toward a patch of brush she had been guarding all along.
Moments later, Eldad saw them.
Seven tiny puppies. Newborn. Fragile. Their umbilical cords still attached.
Each puppy was lifted with care, one by one, passed gently through the brush and placed into safety. The hillside made every movement difficult, but the team never rushed.
JoAnn, Katie, and Loreta worked together in quiet coordination. No panic. No noise. Just steady hands and patience.
The mother—now named Amazon—watched closely at first. She didn’t growl. She didn’t run. As she realized her babies were being protected, her fear softened into trust.
When a Mother Finally Let Go
Amazon followed willingly as her puppies were secured. What had once been hesitation quickly turned into calm acceptance. For the first time since giving birth, she could rest.
Soon after, the two male dogs were rescued as well.
Bear, the Rottweiler, was found to have a microchip—but his previous owner declined to take him back. Juniper, the Pit Bull, was terrified at first, keeping his distance until a humane trap allowed him to be brought to safety without harm.
Each had survived alone for far too long.

A New Beginning Inside Warm Homes
Amazon and her seven puppies—now lovingly named after rivers: Lena, Seine, Nile, Trinity, Tigris, Yukon, and Hudson—were placed into foster care with SoCal Labrador Retriever Rescue.
There, they received warmth. Proper food. Gentle handling. And something they had never known before—security.
Bear and Juniper were welcomed by The Little Red Dog, where they, too, began new chapters filled with patience and care.
From Survival to Safety, Together
Today, every member of this once-hidden family is healthy, calm, and thriving. What began beside a highway ended inside loving homes.
Their story is a reminder that sometimes, the smallest sound—a single cry—can lead to seven lives being saved.
And sometimes, hope arrives exactly when it’s needed most.
